Born Between Breaths

Excerpt from Born Between Breaths over photo of ocean
How long can I stay under?
Liminal, fluid, and alive
Unfurling visions of wonder
Why must I breathe in to survive?
Let it rain down and thunder
In between these breaths I will thrive
As we are torn asunder

We keep dancing in the toxic air
We keep burning like we just don’t care
We’re caught up in this metaphor
We’ve been here many times before

Creation is born of mind
Thoughts come alive in projection
Act out our dreams intertwined
Where are the dreams of connection?
Instead, we think we’re confined
Reach through the surface reflection
Receiving your soul in kind

We keep struggling though it isn’t fair
We keep holding more than we can bear
We’re caught up in this metaphor
We’ve been here many times before

What did you come here to experience, to learn
Acting out the dramas of relationships, life?
What has living here taught you, what makes your heart burn?
Something is being born here and we are the midwife
It’s yours, it’s mine, it’s nothing at all
It’s been born in being since the fall
I search the last place we think to look
In between the last breaths that I took

It’s a stillness that holds me
Moments between each churning wave
Flooding out into the sea
Releasing what I long to save
Surrender and let it be
Setting free the need to feel brave
There’s only humility

We keep laughing while we scream and swear
We keep falling while we dream to dare
We’re caught up in this metaphor
We’ve been here many times before
